Salicylic Acid

BHA · Beta Hydroxy Acid

Salicylic acid structure — benzene ring with a hydroxyl group and an adjacent carboxylic acid group

Also known as

BHA Beta Hydroxy Acid

Main function

Pore-clearing Oil-soluble exfoliation Anti-acne

Salicylic acid is the main beta hydroxy acid used in skincare. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, it's oil-soluble, so it can get inside a clogged, oily pore rather than just working across the skin's surface.

What does this mean for melanin-rich skin?

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it gets into clogged pores rather than just sweeping across the surface the way water-soluble acids do. That matters for melanin-rich skin because it clears the acne that often triggers PIH in the first place. It does this without the deep, fast penetration that raises irritation risk with some other acids.

It's generally considered one of the gentler acids for darker skin tones when used at cosmetic strengths. Anyone can still react if it's overused, so starting low and building up slowly is still the safer approach.

Evidence

Pore-clearing, reduced PIH triggers Mechanistic · Clinical

Well-established mechanism: oil-soluble delivery into the pore reduces the acne that commonly leads to PIH in melanin-rich skin.

How does climate affect this?

Salicylic acid as a raw ingredient is stable in heat. Its practical climate advantage is functional rather than chemical: it cuts through excess oil and sweat, which matters in humid conditions where clogged pores and breakouts tend to worsen.

Key considerations

  • — A finished product's real-world stability still depends on its full formulation, not the acid alone.

What can you actually check?

Every cosmetic sold in Nigeria is legally required to carry a NAFDAC number. Check yours on NAFDAC's NAPAMS portal — no result, or a completely different product, is your answer.

Then check the ingredients list for "Salicylic Acid" or "BHA" by name and its listed percentage where shown — over-the-counter products are typically capped around 2%.

⚠️ Texture, smell, or price aren't reliable ways to prove a cosmetic is genuine — a legitimate formulator can vary all three, and a fake can imitate all three. They're worth noticing, not relying on. When in doubt, verify with NAFDAC.

The oil-soluble delivery mechanism and comedolytic action described here are well-established, widely reproduced dermatological pharmacology — not tied to a single cited trial for this entry.
